Dirty hair protection from ozone poisoning

Unwashed hair may have an important protective role, U.S. researchers suggest. According to them, covering the hair sebum absorbed ozone - oxygen species, which may be serious damage to human health in high concentrations. Researchers from the University of Missouri at Rolla, samples were exposed to ozone dirty and clean washed human hair. As it turned out, within 24 hours of the experiment, dirty hair on average seven times more ozone than clean recorded. "Of course, ozone compulsory component of sebum," - says study co-author Glenn Morrison (Glenn Morrison). "Apparently, the owners of dirty hair have significantly reduce the concentration of ozone, compared with the general level in the room," - he said. Ozone is toxic by inhalation: In high concentrations, it is an irritation of the respiratory tract and causes damage to the lung surfactant. Ozone poisoning can lead to death. However, how large protective effect of dirty hair, it is not clear: more research scientists will have shown that the interaction with ozone produced in unwashed hair samples volatile compounds can cause respiratory irritation.
