Drugs used to treat cancer can result in severe brain damage

Drugs commonly used to treat cancer, can damage the brain, causing persist for many years after treatment, scientists say. Drug 5-fluorouracil is used in conjunction with other treatments for cancer of the breast, ovary, colon, stomach, pancreatic and bladder cancer. Tests on mice have shown that these drugs damage the brain cells and the emergence of a number of neurological problems lead. The study was published in the Journal of Biology. Scientists believe that the results may explain some of the neurological side effects of chemotherapy. The result is usually in the form of symptoms such as memory loss, concentration problems, behavioral problems and can even manifest dementia. These side effects often associated with depression and for the medical diagnosis and treatment of cancer. According to experts, this is a very important discovery, but unfortunately often use such medications as needed to save a life. However, the knowledge of such side effects as the base for the production of drugs to the brain cells in the course of cancer therapy are protected.
